Encounter The Reality of Jesus

ABBA: Honoring Dad

edge

Psalm 40:1-5 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.

3 Qualities Shared by heavenly Father & My Earthly father

  1. Rock-Solid

He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.”

Psalm 46:1-2
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.

  1. Awe-some - Expressing or Inspiring Awe.

“Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. “

A God of Wonder
  • “We love to be fascinated! God put that desire inside of us because He is revealing the endless wonder of his reality in our lives through the journey of knowing him.”

One of our emphasis at Overflow: Discovering the Wonder of God.
  • “God is to hiding things from us he is hiding thing for us” -Bill Johnson

  • Proverbs 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.

3. Dedicated.
“Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust.”

Hebrews 6:16-19
Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding. God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls….

ABBA: Royal Identity

edge

James 1:16-18 So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.

The Accuser will always Question 2 things….
1. What God says.
“Did God really say…”
2. What God says about you.
“If you are the SON of God.”

“The problem is not not that the enemy comes to you and speaks and accuses and allures you. He wouldn't be attacking you if you were no threat to his kingdom. The problem comes in when we believe that deceiver.”

Not because of what is wrong with you, it is what is right within you!

1 Peter 2:4-12 You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor. And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. As the Scriptures say, “I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen for great honor, and anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him, “The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.” And, “He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them. But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.” Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.

Because God is your Daddy….
1. You are Approved!

  • You are not a victim….you don’t eat scraps. You feast on Gods abundance.

  • THE FACT THAT THE KING PICKS YOU MAKES YOU ROYALTY!

  • Chosen: Eklektos - Elected, selected by implication favorite chosen, elect.

  • “Most people try to find approval through accomplishment or by how many people know their name, laugh at their jokes, retweet their post, like their status, how many call on their birthday, or if others say they are pretty. That may be how the world measures approval but my God approves of you before you do one single thing.”

Matthew 3:16-17 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
  • Bringing God pleasure does not come from performance it comes from position.

  • We don’t function for Gods approval we function from Gods approval.

  1. You are an Anointed Saint.

  • “A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE BELONGING TO GOD.”

  • A NEW Creation...Got Changes our Identity! He’s a name changer!

Colossians 1:21-23 You who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault. But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News.
  • “Just sinners” When that statement is made its usually a False humility statement in an effort to make light of the sin issues in our lives.

  • I Timothy 1 Paul mentions that “worst of sinners”...he is referencing his history.

  • Believers are referred to as saints over 40 times in the NT.

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

3. You are Royal Ambassadors
2 Corinthians 5:20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us….
Ambassadors: Highest rank representative of the King in this world.

A. We have an Kingly etiquette/manners
  • We do not live as common men do. We have a code, a standard not because we are better than everybody else but because we belong to God.

B. We have kingly Authority.
  • No to demand or disgrace but to EMPOWER!

  • We rule like Jesus. Not from a pompous throne but w/ dirty hands & calloused knees.

  • You have the permission to treat others right when they do you wrong.

  • Forgiveness. Kindness. Golden-RULEness.

  • We are dead to that old, ugly, corrupt, carnal, mean, spoiled, ungrateful nature.

C. We bring kingly Value.

  • Destroying the Darkness by Loving the world!

  • “Everybody wants a King like Jesus.”

“Being a good Ambassador does come farm ambition or determination it just comes from a response of children who know who they are and function in that reality.”

----------------------------------------------------------

At the end WW2, much of Europe lay in ruins. Buildings had been bombed and burned out, streets lay under dust and rubble, and many orphaned children wandered the streets, picking among the ruins for clothes and food.
Early one morning, an American soldier was driving his jeep through the war-torn streets of London, England. As he turned a corner, he spied a little boy, dressed in rags. The boy stood with his nose pressed against the steamed window of a pastry shop. Inside, the cook was working a large lump of dough for a fresh batch of donuts.
The soldier pulled his jeep to the curb and stopped. He got out of the jeep, strode into the little shop and bought a dozen donuts. Then he turned on his heels, left the store, and extended the bag fresh donuts to the boy. “Here,” he said. “I bought these for you.”
The boy looked at the soldier with wide-eyes and took the bag. But as the soldier started to return to his jeep, he felt a hearty tug on his coat. He turned back and faced the boy.
“Mister,” the boy asked, his eyes still wide. “Are you God?

ABBA: Fearless Children

edge

Romans 8:15-16 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.

Orphan issues…
Insecurity, jealousy, anger, the root of those things...fear
“Does concern ever control you, your fears limit you?”

  • Fear of Rejection. Being liked or accepted

  • Fear of Abandonment.

  • Fear of Failure (fear of being out of control, Anger)

Most of us cover our fears by fears off as anger

The problem of Fear: Fear is bondage that control us.
  • There are 530 Medically documented types of phobias

  • Fear vs fright

  • Fear is learned….rooted in tainted experience.

  • Fear sets in whenever we feel out of control, children have no need for control because their will is yielded to their parent.

Children:
  • My Children have very little concern….No fear rules their life.

  • They don’t worry about what other people thing bills. They know we got it.

Mark 10:13-16 One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him. When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his disciples. He said to them, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” Then he took the children in his arms and placed his hands on their heads and blessed them.

"A child like faith is not something we must not grow out of.”

Things that wont help our fears...
  1. Masquerading fear as Anger.

  2. Worrying

  3. Complaining / Whining.

4. By Being “Independent”

There is no reason to Fear because...
1. We are His
James 1:16-18 So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.
  • If we are His than we are His responsibly.

  • “Our confidence and comfort does not come from our performance it comes because we have yielded our life to God as our good and wise Father.”

2. We can Trust Him
  • God is Nature is immutable.(unchanging)

  • He is worthy of our trust.

  • Our greatest demonstration of faith is when we say God: “Only you can!”

Luke 12:22-32 Then, turning to his disciples, Jesus said, “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear. For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing. Look at the ravens. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than any birds! Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things? “Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? “And don’t be concerned about what to eat and what to drink. Don’t worry about such things. These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers all over the world, but your Father already knows your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need. “So don’t be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom.

3. We are perfectly Loved
1 John 4:16-18 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

  • Fear has to do with punishment & punishment was poured out on the cross.

  • It is hard to walk in confidence trusting a Father that would punish a child with sickness or poverty!?

  • He is a good and loves us perfectly

ABBA: Born of Spirit

edgeRomans 8:9-17 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory… Colossians 1:9-23 We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better. We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins. Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross. This includes you who were once far away from God. The reality of being Born in Spirit.
  • We are Transferred by Transformation.

  • Colossians 1:13 “For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son.”

  • This Transformation called being Born again

  • Being Born again is what enables us to be children of God.

John 1:10-18 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son. John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’” From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. But the one and only Son is himself God and is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.

  • “For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.”

2. We Have a New “Super” Nature
  • We are spiritually dead without Christ. In Christ we have a living Spirit.

  • Although It may be our “new nature” it is our predominant nature.

  • We are Primarily Spirit.

  • “We are not humans with a spirit, rather we are spirits beings living in physical human bodies.”

  • John 3:5-6 "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.

  • We struggle when we see our selves simply as people and then we have a spiritual life.

We learn a lot about Our New Nature in Jesus.
  • Jesus wasn't born again because he IS living spirit. God is spirit. John 4:24

  • In a sense Jesus’ second birth was when he was born physically.

  • 100% God & 100% Man. Always God...Then born a Man.

  • He Showed us what it is like to be a Son in the Kingdom Filled & motivated by God Spirit.

  • “The life of Jesus is a prototype of What Spirit filled sons in the Kingdom look like.”

“His Spirit, the Spirit that raise Jesus from the dead that indwelled and empowered Jesus now dwells in you. You have the same Spirit!

  • Being children of God Enables & Empowers Us.

A. Enables us to know God!
  • This mystery thing of God living in a temple while a select group of people get to meet with him is old and outdate.

  • God is into you knowing him and experiencing him...HE is in fact YOUR FATHER.

  • You have access to him as much as any other believer.

1 Corinthians 2:7-10 No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"-- but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God….. 16 "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ. “You can know The Father as Jesus know the Father. You have the mind of Christ.

B. Empowers us for greatness
  • John 1:10 He gave the right(Power: Exousia) to become children of God.

  • God Qualifies you through adopting you.

  • We need to start acting like Royalty, Jesus Royalty with humble & meek confidence.

ABBA: His Nature

edge

Galatians 4:4-7 But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.

Luke 15:11-32
Jesus told them this story: “A man had two sons. The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now before you die.’ So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons. “A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living. About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything. “When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’ “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called
your son.’ “But his father said to the servants,
‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began. “Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields working. When he returned home, he heard music and dancing in the house, and he asked one of the servants what was going on. ‘Your brother is back,’ he was told, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf. We are celebrating because of his safe return.’ “The older brother was angry and wouldn’t go in. His father came out and begged him, but he replied, ‘All these years I’ve slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to. And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends. Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf!’ “His father said to him, ‘Look, dear son, you have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours. We had to celebrate this happy day. For your brother was dead and has come back to life! He was lost, but now he is found!’”

THE NATURE OF ABBA
1. ABBA is Intimate & Personal

  • “... And while he was still a long way off. his father saw him coming.Shows that the father was longing and waiting for the return of his son.
  • ABBA Aramaic, slaves & servants were forbidden to address the head of the family by this title. “Abba Is the word framed by the lips of infants, indicating absolute trust; "father" expresses an intelligent apprehension of the relationship. The two together express the love and intelligent confidence of the child.
  • Mark 14:36 “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

2. ABBA is FILLED with Love & Compassion
  • I John 4:8 God is love.
  • “Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son.”
  • Psalm 145:8-10 The LORD is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. The LORD is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.
All of your works will thank you, LORD, and your faithful followers will praise you.

3. ABBA is Affectionate…

Embraced him, and kissed him…”

  • He had been living among the “unclean pigs” Stinky filthy.

  • Those pigs ate and pooped in the same spot.

Ephesians 1:5-8 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. He has showered(Lavished) his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding.

4. ABBA Restores & Repositions

“His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.’ “But his father said...
You’re Not going to be a slave….

  • GET THE FINEST ROBE...Probably his own Robe...covering up the PIG filled uncleanliness

  • PUT A RING ON HIS FINGER... Sign of Wealth & possible A family signet ring?—a symbol of reinstatement to sonship.

  • SNDALS FOR HIS FEET. Slaves did not normally wear sandals, though they carried and tied a master’s sandals.

  • KILL THE FATTENED CALF- The ONE WE HAVE BEEN FATTENING!

The father is saying, “No, I won’t receive you back as a servant. I’ll receive you only as a son.”

5. ABBA is a Rejoicer, He Likes to Party

  • We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began.…”
