Man, Sin, & Salvation “We were designed to be in a relationship with God. A fully functioning, meaningful relationship.”
I. Man Genesis 1:27–28 (NIV) 27 God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.” A. Created by him B. In His image Genesis 2:7 (NIV) The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. “It’s the breath of God that makes something someone.”
C. Created for him. Colossians 1:16(NIV) “...All things were created by Him and for Him…”
“God loves you and has a wonderful plan that He wants to put you in.”
II. Sin Genesis 3:1–15 (NIV) 3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” 4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
A. Saw the fruit was “good for food” Lust of the Flesh — Desire to satisfy self apart from God
B. The fruit was “pleasing to the eye” Lust of the Eyes — Desire to take what looks good but isn’t from God.
C. Desired the fruit “ good for gaining wisdom” Pride of Life — Desire to have knowledge and experience apart from God.
1 John 2:16 (NIV) For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.
What is sin?
III. The consequence of sin A. Dilutes The Image Romans 3:23 (NIV) For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
B. Disconnects Genesis 3:7–8 (NIV) 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
Isaiah 59:2 (NIV) Your iniquities have separated you from your God; Your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.
C. Destroys “God is not the cause of all the trouble in the world; sin is.”
Eternal consequences: 2 Thessalonians 1:7–9 (NIV) 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord...
The “Cosmic Tyrant” of Sin
Romans 6:14 (NIV) “For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.”
Grace: Favorable, limitless access to the kindness and goodness of God.
IV. Redemption
Genesis 3:15 (NIV) I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Romans 5:17–19 (NIV) 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. 18 Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
Redeem: To buy back. 1. Agorazo “to buy in the marketplace.” 1 Peter 1:18–19 (NIV) 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
2. Exagorazo- “To buy out of the marketplace” Galatians 5:1 (NIV) It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 4: 4-7 (NIV) 4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, 5 to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. 6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.
Tetelestai: It Is Finished.
V. Our Response: Romans 6:23 (NIV) For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 10:9–11 (NIV) 9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”
