Made To Be: Blessed are the Pure in Heart

Blessed: Experiencing fully your God-breathed intention.

Matthew 5:2–10 (NIV) 2 He began to teach them. He said: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:8(NIV) Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

The Heart
Luke 6:45 (NIV) The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart, his mouth speaks.

“Our words and actions reveal what is in our hearts!”

Jeremiah 17:9–10 (NIV) 9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind.

The pure in heart
Matthew 15:19–20 (NIV) 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

Psalm 24:3–5 (NIV) 3 Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place? 4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god. 5 They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Savior.

Seeing God

“It takes God to see God.”
“Jesus made the Father accessible.”

Jeremiah 24:7 (NIV) I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.

1 John 1:7–9 (NIV) 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Nurturing Purity of Heart
A. Renew your heart

James 4:8 (NIV) Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Ezekiel 11:19–20 (NIV) 19 I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. 20 Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God.

B.  Guard your heart
Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

“The enemy doesn’t need to destroy you, He will be satisfied to distract you.”

C. Lead your Heart
1. Set your heart
Luke “12:34 (NIV) Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Psalm 86:11 (NIV) Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

2. Feast on the word
“You lead your heart by what you feed your heart.”
Psalm 119:11 (NIV) I have hidden your word in my heart that I might “not sin against you.

3. How you work/create
Psalm 57:7 (NIV) My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music.

Colossians 3:23 (NIV) Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,

4. Be quick to repent
Psalm 51:10–11 (NIV) Godreate in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

5. Learn to linger

Psalm 51:10–11 (NIV) 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

Made To Be: Blessed are the Meek: Matthew 5:5

Blessed: Experiencing fully your God-breathed intention.

Matthew 5:1–10 (NIV) 1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 He began to teach them. He said: 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Jesus is attracted to pain(hurting, broken)6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Matthew 5:5(NIV) 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Meekness

Meekness: Strength under control.

The Meekness of Jesus may be his most overlooked value.
Matthew 11:28–30 (NIV) 28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

"Jesus is meekness personified."

"Jesus shows us that the Father is sovereign, yet meek."

Philippians 2:6–7 (NIV) 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

Inherit the Earth
Matthew 5:5(NIV) Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Psalm 37:7–11 (NIV"  7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. 8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. 9 For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land. 10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. 11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Growing in meekness
Philippians 2:1–5 (NIV) 2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus...

1. In humility, submit to God

Galatians 5:22–23 (NIV) But the fruit of the Spirit is ...gentleness and self-control.

2. Serve & honor others:

Ephesians 4:2–3 (NIV) 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

3. Proceed slowly
James 1:19 (NIV) Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.

1 Samuel 24
